FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Discarded Books

If you have weeded your collection using the guidelines in the Library Manual, then follow this procedure to dispose of your weeded materials:

  1. Withdraw your weeded materials from inventory.
  2. Cross out any identifying marks on the items with a permanent marker.
  3. Place the items in a box and label it: “LIBRARY BOOKS FOR DISCARD”
  4. Email Jeff Stephens, (JStephens@FES.Follett.com) the DPS Follett Educational Services representative with a copy to Pat_Tebben@dpsk12.org and request a pick-up from your location. Always specify the number of boxes you have for pickup, and tell Jeff if he will have to move the boxes from the 2nd or 3rd floor.
  5. Stack the boxes in a place that is easily accessible for Jeff.
  6. Jeff Stephens will confirm a date and time with you for pick-up. If you do not hear from Jeff within 24 hours, email Pat_Tebben@dpsk12.org. She will follow up on your request.
  7. Follett Educational Services purchases discarded textbooks from schools. They do not purchase discarded library books.

Donated/Gift Book Guidelines

The definition of a gift book is one that you have had donated, purchased, etc. for your library that was not acquired through ERS Acquisitions OR there is no BIB record in Via. Gifts or donated items should meet the same selection criteria as purchased materials as far as need, quality, appropriateness, usability, etc. The professional staff shall decide on the best use for donated items.

Once a year, usually in the spring, you will receive an email notifying you when it is acceptable to send in your donated/gift books for processing. For one or two items OR if there is no BIB record, you may contact Bill Rejebian in Cataloging (720.423.8107) for assistance throughout the year. As new material is a priority and our storage space is limited, please do not send books before you are notified to via email.

DPS Shares

DPS Shares or Inter-Branch Loan (IBL) refers to the loaning of library material between DPS school libraries. The Via Holds function and your Outlook Email account are used to process and track DPS Shares requests.

A detailed guide to the process is in the library manual (search keywords: DPS Shares). For a two page quick steps guide Word document, click here.

LION/My LION/LION Cub

LION is the acronym for "Library Information on the Net". This is the online catalog for all DPS school libraries. The LION webpage has links to the DPS Online Databases, authoritative, electronic reference resources and My LION, a feature that allows students to check their circulation record. Maintenance and administration of the LION server is handled by ERS Technical Support. This PowerPoint presentation will help get you started with My LION: My LION 101 PowerPoint

LION Cub is an alternative interface to the library catalog designed specifically for younger children. The interface uses simple graphics to assist children in searching the LION database for books. You can request access to LION Cub for your school by sending an e-mail to ERS Helpdesk and include the words "LION Cub" in the subject line of your e-mail

Via/Via Circ

Via and Via Circ are all names that refer to the software that runs the library (LION) catalog for DPS. The software is manufactured by Innovative Interfaces, Inc. (www.iii.com). Librarians and ERS personnel utilize Via and Via Circ to catalog and manage items, check books in and out, view patron records and run reports, etc.

The Library Manual has more detailed information on managing your library...but some quick answers are provided below:
